Honor Your Mom and Dad

Sermon Notes

Exodus 20:12 NIV

“Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you.”

Children:

  1. Give them some grace.
  2. Love your parents the way Jesus loves you.
  3. Your future depends on it.

We need to be intentional about our relationships with our parents.

Ephesians 6:1-3 NIV

“Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother” —which is the first commandment with a promise — “so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.”

4. It’s never too late to fix things with Mom and Dad.

Proverbs 10:1 NIV

The proverbs of Solomon: A wise son brings joy to his father, but a foolish son brings grief to his mother.

Exodus 21:17 NIV

“Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.”

Deuteronomy 21:18-21 NIV

If someone has a stubborn and rebellious son who does not obey his father and mother and will not listen to them when they discipline him, his father and mother shall take hold of him and bring him to the elders at the gate of his town. They shall say to the elders, “This son of ours is stubborn and rebellious. He will not obey us. He is a glutton and a drunkard.” Then all the men of his town are to stone him to death. You must purge the evil from among you. All Israel will hear of it and be afraid.

By honoring Mom and Dad, you honor God by leaning into His command.

Parents:

  • How you honor your mom and dad is how your kids will honor you.
  • What we say to our children, we are whispering to our grandchildren.
  • You can’t make your children believe, but you can make it hard for them to doubt.

God commands us to honor Mom and Dad.

  1. Give them some grace.
  2. Love your parents the way Jesus loves you.
  3. Your future depends on it.
  4. It’s never too late to fix things with Mom and Dad.
