Who You Say I Am

Sermon Notes

Genesis 25:23-26 NIV

"The LORD said to her, 'Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples from within you will be separated; one people will be stronger than the other, and the older will serve the younger.' When the time came for her to give birth, there were twin boys in her womb. The first to come out was red, and his whole body was like a hairy garment, so they named him Esau. After this, his brother came out, with his hand grasping Esau's heel; so he was named Jacob."

 ‭‭Genesis‬ ‭27:1‬ ‭NIV‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

"When Isaac was old, and his eyes were so weak that he could no longer see, he called for Esau, his older son, and said to him, 'My son.' 'Here I am,' he answered."

 ‭‭Genesis‬ ‭27:2-4‬ ‭NIV‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

"Isaac said, 'I am now an old man and don't know the day of my death. Now then, get your equipment—your quiver and bow—and go out to the open country to hunt some wild game for me. Prepare me the kind of tasty food I like and bring it to me to eat so that I may give you my blessing before I die.'"

 ‭‭Genesis‬ ‭27:5-7‬ ‭NIV‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

"Now Rebekah was listening as Isaac spoke to his son Esau. When Esau left for the open country to hunt game and bring it back, Rebekah said to her son Jacob, 'Look, I overheard your father say to your brother Esau, 'Bring me some game and prepare me some tasty food to eat, so that I may give you my blessing in the presence of the Lord before I die.'"

 ‭‭Genesis‬ ‭27:8-10‬ ‭NIV‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

"Now, my son, listen carefully and do what I tell you: Go out to the flock and bring me two choice young goats, so I can prepare some tasty food for your father, just the way he likes it. Then take it to your father to eat so that he may give you his blessing before he dies."

 Genesis 27:18-29 NIV

"He went to his father and said, 'My father.'

'Yes, my son,' he answered. 'Who is it?'

Jacob said to his father, 'I am Esau, your firstborn. I have done as you told me. Please sit up and eat some of my game, so that you may give me your blessing.'

Isaac asked his son, 'How did you find it so quickly, my son?'

'The LORD, your God, gave me success,' he replied.

Then Isaac said to Jacob, 'Come near so I can touch you, my son, to know whether you really are my son Esau or not.'

Jacob went close to his father Isaac, who touched him and said, 'The voice is the voice of Jacob, but the hands are the hands of Esau.' He did not recognize him, for his hands were hairy like those of his brother Esau; so he proceeded to bless him. 'Are you really my son Esau?' he asked.

'I am,' he replied.

Then he said, 'My son, bring me some of your game to eat so that I may give you my blessing.'

Jacob brought it to him, and he ate, and he brought some wine, and he drank. Then his father Isaac said to him, 'Come here, my son, and kiss me.'

So he went to him and kissed him. When Isaac caught the smell of his clothes, he blessed him and said,

'Ah, the smell of my son is like the smell of a field that the LORD has blessed. May God give you heaven's dew and earth's richness— an abundance of grain and new wine. May nations serve you and people bow down to you. Be lord over your brothers, and may the sons of your mother bow down to you. May those who curse you be cursed and those who bless you be blessed.'"

 Genesis‬ ‭29:16-18‬ ‭NIV‬‬‬‬

"Now Laban had two daughters; the name of the older was Leah, and the name of the younger was Rachel. Leah had weak eyes, but Rachel had a lovely figure and was beautiful. Jacob was in love with Rachel and said, 'I'll work for you seven years in return for your younger daughter, Rachel.'"

 Genesis‬ ‭29:21-25‬ ‭NIV‬‬

"Then Jacob said to Laban, 'Give me my wife. My time is completed, and I want to make love to her.' So Laban brought together all the people of the place and gave a feast. But when evening came, he took his daughter Leah and brought her to Jacob, and Jacob made love to her. And Laban gave his servant Zilpah to his daughter as her attendant. When morning came, there was Leah! So Jacob said to Laban, 'What is this you have done to me? I served you for Rachel, didn't I? Why have you deceived me?'"

‬‬God may allow you to be wounded according to your own temptations to get your attention.

 Genesis‬ ‭30:42‬ ‭NIV‬‬‬‬

"So the weak animals went to Laban and the strong ones to Jacob."

 Genesis‬ ‭31:3‬ ‭NIV

"Then the Lord said to Jacob, 'Go back to the land of your fathers and to your relatives, and I will be with you.'"‬‬‬‬

God may send you back into the place of your greatest anxiety in order to reveal His greatest goodness.

 Genesis 32:9-12 NIV

"Then Jacob prayed, 'O God of my father Abraham, God of my father Isaac, LORD, you who said to me, 'Go back to your country and your relatives, and I will make you prosper,' I am unworthy of all the kindness and faithfulness you have shown your servant. I had only my staff when I crossed this Jordan, but now I have become two camps. Save me, I pray, from the hand of my brother Esau, for I am afraid he will come and attack me and also the mothers with their children. But you have said, 'I will surely make you prosper and will make your descendants like the sand of the sea, which cannot be counted.'"

The Last time Jacob gave an account for His name, He deceived his Dad. This time He tells the truth to His Heavenly Father.

Genesis 32:28 NIV

Then the man said, 'Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome.'"

Israel = one who struggled with God and man and overcame!

 Genesis 32:29-32 NIV

"Jacob said, 'Please tell me your name.' But he replied, 'Why do you ask my name?' Then he blessed him there. So Jacob called the place Peniel, saying, 'It is because I saw God face to face, and yet my life was spared.'"

Revelation‬ ‭2:17‬ ‭NASB

"He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes, to him, I will give some of the hidden manna, and I will give him a white stone, and a new name written on the stone which no one knows but he who receives it."
