Psalm 51

Sermon Notes

For the director of music. A psalm of David. When the prophet Nathan came to him after David had committed adultery with Bathsheba.

 2 Samuel 12:13 NIV

"Then David said to Nathan, 'I have sinned against the Lord.' Nathan replied, 'The Lord has taken away your sin. You are not going to die.'"

God can take our tragedies and turn them into triumphs.

 Psalms 51:1-2 NIV

"Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions. Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin."

 Psalms 51:3 NIV

"For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me."

 Psalms 32:3-4 NIV

"When I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. For day and night, your hand was heavy on me; my strength was sapped as in the heat of summer."

Keep your heart sensitive to what offends the Lord.

 Psalms 51:4 NIV

"Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight; so you are right in your verdict and justified when you judge."

 Psalms 51:5-6 NIV

"Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me. Yet you desired faithfulness even in the womb; you taught me wisdom in that secret place."

 Psalms 51:7 NIV

"Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow."

 Psalms 51:8-9 NIV

"Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones you have crushed rejoice. Hide your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquity."

 Psalms 51:10-12 NIV

"Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me."

Our greatest loss is a severed relationship with God.

 Psalms 51:13 NIV

"Then I will teach transgressors your ways so that sinners will turn back to you."

 Psalms 51:16-17 NIV

"You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings. My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart you, God, will not despise."

What are you keeping above the water?

"Oh my God I cry out to you for forgiveness.  I know that you don’t require more sacrifice, or more serving, or even more generosity as a way to make up for my sins.  You desire a broken and contrite heart, and you promise never to ignore us when we bring that to you.  In light of your abundant mercy and grace I ask you to forgive the following: (spend some time listing whatever God lays on your heart that needs confessed before Him).  Now, my God restore a right spirit within me.  I believe you have forgiven me.  Help me to accept your forgiveness, and to live differently because of your refreshing grace."
