Shabbach
- Matt Nickoson
Sermon Notes
"Shâbach, shaw-bakh': To address in a loud tone. To shout. To commend, glory, and triumph." — Chris Tomlin & Darren Whitehead, Holy Roar: 7 Words That Will Change The Way You Worship
Psalm 63:1-11 NIV
A psalm of David. When he was in the Desert of Judah.
Psalm 63:1 NIV
You, God, are my God, earnestly I seek you; I thirst for you, my whole being longs for you, in a dry and parched land where there is no water.
"Learn from this, and do not say, 'I will get into communion with God when I feel better,' but long for communion now. It is one of the temptations of the devil to tell you not to pray when you do not feel like praying. Pray twice as much then." – Charles Spurgeon
Psalm 63:2-3 NIV
I have seen you in the sanctuary and beheld your power and your glory. Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify (shabbach) you.
In the midst of his weariness and loneliness, David is boldly proclaiming that God is still good!
Psalm 63:4-5 NIV
I will praise (barak) you as long as I live, and in your name I will lift up my hands. I will be fully satisfied as with the richest of foods; with singing lips my mouth will praise (halal) you.
John 4:10 NIV
Jesus answered her, "If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water."
John 4:11-12 NIV
"Sir," the woman said, "you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water? Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his livestock?"
John 4:13-14 NIV
Jesus answered, "Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life."
There is a water we can drink from that offers no satisfaction, and there is a water that fills to the point of overflowing!
Psalm 63:6-8 NIV
On my bed I remember you; I think of you through the watches of the night. Because you are my help, I sing in the shadow of your wings. I cling to you; your right hand upholds me.
Matthew 11:28-30 NIV
"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light."
Psalm 63:9-11 NIV
Those who want to kill me will be destroyed; they will go down to the depths of the earth. They will be given over to the sword and become food for jackals. But the king will rejoice in God; all who swear by God will glory (halal) in him, while the mouths of liars will be silenced.
Revelation 22:17 NIV
"The Spirit and the bride say, 'Come!' And let the one who hears say, 'Come!' Let the one who is thirsty come, and let the one who wishes take the free gift of the water of life."
