Know Why You Are Here
- Matt Nickoson
Sermon Notes
Luke 4:31-32 NIV
"Then he went down to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, and on the Sabbath he taught the people. They were amazed at his teaching, because his words had authority."
Luke 4:33-34 NIV
"In the synagogue, there was a man possessed by a demon, an impure spirit. He cried out at the top of his voice, 'Go away! What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!'"
What are demons?
"There are two equal and opposite errors into which our race can fall about the devils. One is to disbelieve in their existence. The other is to believe and to feel an excessive and unhealthy interest in them." - CS Lewis
Revelation 12:9 NIV
"The great dragon was hurled down—that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him."
Luke 4:35 NIV
"'Be quiet!' Jesus said sternly. 'Come out of him!' Then the demon threw the man down before them all and came out without injuring him."
Jesus has authority over all created things because He is the creator.
Colossians 1:16-17 NIV
"For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him, all things hold together."
Luke 4:36-37 NIV
"All the people were amazed and said to each other, "What words these are! With authority and power he gives orders to impure spirits and they come out!" And the news about him spread throughout the surrounding area."
Luke 4:38-39 NIV
"Jesus left the synagogue and went to the home of Simon. Now Simon's mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked Jesus to help her. So he bent over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her. She got up at once and began to wait on them."
Jesus heals completely and with authority.
Luke 4:40 NIV
"At sunset, the people brought to Jesus all who had various kinds of sickness, and laying his hands on each one, he healed them."
Luke 4:41 NIV
"Moreover, demons came out of many people, shouting, 'You are the Son of God!' But he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew he was the Messiah."
Luke 4:42 NIV
"At daybreak, Jesus went out to a solitary place. The people were looking for him, and when they came to where he was, they tried to keep him from leaving them."
Q: Why did Jesus silence the demons and leave the hurting?
A: Because Jesus has profound clarity about why He is here and what He is supposed to do.
John 14:30-31a NIV
"I will not say much more to you, for the prince of this world is coming. He has no hold over me, but he comes so that the world may learn that I love the Father and do exactly what my Father has commanded me."
Luke 4:43-44 NIV
"But he said, 'I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns also because that is why I was sent.' And he kept on preaching in the synagogues of Judea."
Do you have that same kind of clarity and commitment?
