Jesus Intercedes For Me

Pastor Matt explores Jesus as our advocate and intercessor, highlighting Luke 22:31-32 and other scriptures. He emphasizes how Christ’s sacrifice allows us to draw near to God without fear. The sermon concludes with the significance of baptism as a public declaration of faith and unity with Christ.

Sermon Notes

Luke 22:31 NIV

“Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift all of you as wheat.”

Whatever Satan throws at you is still under the Sovereign control of our Father in Heaven.

Luke 22:32 NIV

But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.”

Jesus’ solution to the strategies of Satan is to pray for you.

  • Refers to one who pleads your case before a judge or ruling authority.

1 John 2:1 NIV

My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One.

1 John 2:2 NIV

He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world”

Because Jesus paid for your sin with His life, He is able to plead His blood as your covering before God the Father.

Hebrews 7:25 NIV

Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them.

“Speak to the Israelites and say to them: ‘When anyone among you brings an offering (draws near) to the Lord, bring as your offering (your drawing near) an animal from either the herd or the flock.'”

Leviticus 1:3-4 NIV

“If the offering is a burnt offering from the herd, you are to offer a male without defect. You must present it at the entrance to the tent of meeting so that it will be acceptable to the Lord. You are to lay your hand on the head of the burnt offering, and it will be accepted on your behalf to make atonement for you.”

Such a high priest truly meets our need—one who is holy, blameless, pure, set apart from sinners, exalted above the heavens.

Hebrews 7:27 NIV

Unlike the other high priests, he does not need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for his own sins, and then for the sins of the people. He sacrificed for their sins once for all when he offered himself.

What response to this kind of love would be appropriate?

Acts 3:19 NIV

Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord,

Colossians 2:11 NIV

In him (Jesus!) you were also circumcised with a circumcision not performed by human hands. Your whole self ruled by the flesh was put off when you were circumcised by Christ,

Colossians 2:12 NIV

having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through your faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead.

Colossians 2:13-14 NIV

When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, having canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross.
