Divorce and Remarriage
- Matt Nickoson
Sermon Notes
2 Peter 3:17 NIV
Therefore, dear friends, since you have been forewarned, be on your guard so that you may not be carried away by the error of the lawless and fall from your secure position.
Our salvation is secured if we continue in our faith.
“If it makes you happy, it can’t be that bad.” – Sheryl Crow
2 Peter 3:18 NIV
But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever! Amen.
Luke 16:14-15 NIV
The Pharisees, who loved money, heard all this and were sneering at Jesus. He said to them, “You are the ones who justify yourselves in the eyes of others, but God knows your hearts. What people value highly is detestable in God’s sight.
“Jesus directly mentions where they (the Pharisees) stand before God. They may justify themselves before people, but God knows their hearts. What they value highly, God detests. Jesus can hardly use a stronger word than what the NIV translates as ‘detestable.’” – Darrell L. Bock, Luke (The NIV Application Commentary)
Luke 16:16-17 NIV
“The Law and the Prophets were proclaimed until John. Since that time, the good news of the kingdom of God is being preached, and everyone is forcing their way into it. It is easier for heaven and earth to disappear than for the least stroke of a pen to drop out of the Law.”
God’s word is the Truth. Therefore, we can know who God is, how He built the world to work, and what He expects from us by studying His word.
Luke 16:18 NIV
“Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery, and the man who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.”
In Jesus’ view: The commitment To GET married, is a commitment to STAY married.
Ecclesiastes 5:4NIV
When you make a vow to God, do not delay to fulfill it. He has no pleasure in fools; fulfill your vow.
To break the marriage commitment and remarry is to commit adultery, and to marry someone who has divorced is to commit adultery. That is how serious the commitment of our word is to be in our relationships.
A. No Divorce and No Remarriage is the only acceptable way before God.
D. All Divorce and All Remarriage are acceptable before God.
B. Some Divorce and No Remarriage is the only acceptable way before God.
Matthew 5:31-32 NIV
“It has been said, ‘Anyone who divorces his wife must give her a certificate of divorce.’ But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, makes her the victim of adultery, and anyone who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.”
C. Some Divorce and Some Remarriage are acceptable before God.
1 Corinthians 7:10-11 NIV
To the married, I give this command (not I, but the Lord): A wife must not separate from her husband. But if she does, she must remain unmarried or else be reconciled to her husband. And a husband must not divorce his wife.
1 Corinthians 7:15 NIV
But if the unbeliever leaves, let it be so. The brother or the sister is not bound in such circumstances; God has called us to live in peace.
Mark 10:2-3 NIV
Some Pharisees came and tested him by asking, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?”
“What did Moses command you?” he replied.
Mark 10:4-5 NIV
They said, “Moses permitted a man to write a certificate of divorce and send her away.”
“It was because your hearts were hard that Moses wrote you this law,” Jesus replied.
A hard heart always precedes divorce.
Mark 10:6-7 NIV
“But at the beginning of creation God ‘made them male and female.’ ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife,”
Mark 10:8-9 NIV
“and the two will become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”
Every person should consider marriage as a lifelong commitment and do everything they can to honor it … as a sign to this world that Jesus is both our Lord and Savior!
Ephesians 5:24-25 NIV
Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything. Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.
