Kingsway takes on ministry partnerships to support ministries that are meeting needs and loving others both locally and globally. Here in Indy, Wheeler Mission has been doing just that for over 100 years. Their goal is to provide critically needed goods and services to those struggling with homelessness and poverty.

Due to the global pandemic, Wheeler Mission was asked to do more in just a few years than at any other time in its 129-year history, stretching its capacity to provide a safe, compassionate environment for the vulnerable in Indianapolis. During the pandemic, Wheeler served as one of the primary coordinating agencies working to increase capacity for safe shelter throughout Indianapolis, allowing the vulnerable to effectively social distance. This meant that Wheeler Mission was providing staffing and meal delivery at hotel sites while continuing to operate their existing shelter and program sites throughout Central Indiana.

Wheeler also operated as a Winter Contingency provider for the city from the onset of the pandemic through the spring of 2022. For almost three years, non-stop, Wheeler staff ensured that every vulnerable individual in Indianapolis with nowhere else to turn had a safe space to receive food, shelter, and services. And it’s worth pointing out that the pandemic arrived on the heels of a growing demand for shelter and services among women and children experiencing homelessness in our community. In fact, Indianapolis has seen about a 25% increase in the total number of households with children experiencing homelessness in Indianapolis. The need is great and growing.
