The Spirit of Truth
August 3, 2022 | Leah Lynch
Recently, I had the opportunity to share with our middle school students on a Sunday morning. Over the years, God has continually proven true my belief that there’s never any coincidence in what I’m teaching or sharing when I’m teaching or sharing it. He usually has something to teach me as well. On this particular Sunday, there was a last-minute need for me to step in and teach. As I read the lesson, it was instant. There was no question. God had this planned all along. He knew.
What part of the lesson gave it away?
“One of the most important jobs of the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Truth, is to show us what is true about God—and about ourselves too. When we’re faced with questions, confusion, or conflicting messages about who God is and who we are, Jesus doesn’t leave us to figure it out all alone. The Holy Spirit shows us truth.”
In teaching, I had the opportunity to share some of my own story and the lies I have struggled to not believe. It’s not been an easy journey learning how to fight the lies and replace them with truth, but it’s been so worth it. Teaching about the Holy Spirit was a humbling reminder of His power and His desire for me to live in the truth.
Our students are bombarded daily with messages coming at them from all sides. As parents and as leaders, we want to protect them. We want to keep them from what harms them. We want them to see and embrace the truth. But how many times do we feel like we are fighting a losing battle? More times than I think we care to admit.
The truth, though? We aren’t fighting a losing battle. We have what it takes because as followers of Jesus, we have the Spirit of Truth.
The Holy Spirit - He is all about Jesus, all of the time, in all that He does. In John 8, Jesus tells us He is the truth that sets us free. In John 14:6 He says, “I am the way and the truth and the life.” If the Holy Spirit is all about Jesus, we can see why Jesus calls Him the Spirit of Truth.
While we can’t put our students in a bubble for the rest of their lives, we can lean into the Spirit of Truth to help us point them to Jesus. I highly encourage you to check out this blog post about the role of the Holy Spirit in raising our teenagers. It’s about a five-minute read but it’s worth it!
Whether you are fighting your own lies or going to battle on behalf of your student, you are not alone. Reach out to our team. We are here for you!
